Found a box of old gobblegums I tried to make when the game first came out. Not the greatest quality but I think they look alright.

great coming back to Blind ops 4

    Posted: 09 Jul 2020 10:31 AM PDT

Haven't focused on zombies for the last couple months. But last night I decided to give it a shot and play hardcore difficulty on classified. damn it was nice, decent challenge, not to mention having to learn the sound engine again

I did have a friend with a vision playing as well. But we made it to 38 or 39 relatively easily. Still have hope I can do 30 hardcore solo

Controversial opinion: Black Ops III is overrated and definitely not the best to show what zombies has to offer.

No idea where to start with this post. I'll probably just break this down into sections.

    Maps

BO3 introduces 5 new maps (I don't count The Giant). Whilst some of the styles are interesting, zombies took a strive to be more cinematic and epic rather than taking inspiration from deep WWII history and conspiracy theories routed in the real world. An example of this is how dragons exist. Why are they here? Because dragons are cool. One criticism I've heard and I have to agree with is the fact that zombies stopped being about zombies and instead becomes a backdrop to whatever else they try to show.

The maps all use the Origins formula in the sense that each one puts you on a set of vague quests where some quests aren't even hinted at. For some maps, this is okay as they can be simple to figure out like building the Apothican Servant isn't that complicated and you can get it by just progressing. Where it does get bad is with complex things like the bows and other elements that are required for you to enjoy the map. You shouldn't have to look up a YouTube tutorial every time a new map releases just to be able to play the game. I'm not saying the game should be linear but it seems the devs have catered more towards the vocal YouTubers and Easter Egg hunters rather than the vast player base of the game.

Imagine being a new player in BO3 (I feel bad for you). Shadows of Evil is the only base map in the game. I think it is safe to say that it is quite overwhelming to attempt to learn the mechanics of the map all at once with no hints of what to do. Think about it. You have the rituals, beast mode, a huge map, pods and all of the previous base mechanics of zombies on top of that. I love Shadows but damn that is something that has definitely put off a lot of new players. A simple fix would've been to have survival maps return from the previous game but that's another issue.

They do also have remastered maps and I do believe this is the only reason people put this game at the top. While beautiful remakes of the originals, they fall from the problem that they have became too easy. I also think it is bizarre that they make you pay £25 for maps that you likely already own.

    Gameplay

Now this is the big one. I think no one is going to be annoyed at me saying this game is way too easy. Gobblegums are the new feature this game introduces which at first seemed pretty fun. In practice, you can level up, get divinium or spend real money to have OP abilities whenever you feel like. Ammo is now no longer an issue given the amount of Gobblegums that just give you more. Zombies became no longer about surviving, but instead it's more about the fastest strategy due to it's ease. I mean, there's literally a Gobblegum that gives you all perks with no drawback. You just have to be lucky to get it.

Another interesting feature is weapon kits. While I do believe that zombies should have had rewards from a level up system, zombies tended to have more in-match customisation which made it so special such as the perks you choose, loadouts etc. Other than that, not got much to say.

The game also seems to regress as almost nothing is brought over from BO2. Buildables being one of the few exceptions. All the gamemodes, weapons, characters and even map formats are absent from the new maps (bar Origins).

Now to talk about the Pack-a-Punch system. Double Pap is insanely broken. There's no reason to get a weapon out of the mystery box when you can just get a wall weapon, upgrade it and now it's just like a wonderweapon that you can buy ammo for. Why get the BRM or Dingo when the Kuda can be bought off the wall and do the same thing. It completely destroys weapon variety.

    Story

This will definitely be the most controversial. I think the story of this game is far less interesting than what came before. It's far from being about Nazi Zombies and is now about a heroic quest travelling through the multiverse to fight evil aliens. Rather than taking from real life events and theories, it now created a whole new alien race which is far less interesting than the mystery of the vril. Rather than aliens being just a device used to explain supernatural elements, they are now the main antagonist of the series. They also leave no mystery or speculation. They used to be a species that we couldn't understand and therefore were left up to speculation. It doesn't help that they introduce a main antagonist this late into the franchise.

The characters and their journey is also largely uninteresting and holds no weight. So the Origins characters now have to go to different places in different universes to collect their souls from alternate versions of them. The issue is, the people they kill don't matter to us. They aren't the characters from moon and there are many versions of them so why care? It's made out to be really emotional but why do the Origins characters even care? It's not even them from the future either. It doesn't help that the goal doesn't really make much logical sense either. The summoning key is meant to be the most powerful artefact, but it literally does whatever the plot wants it to do and that's it. They need to collect their souls to have in the house but why? So alternate versions of them get to live in the ''perfect world''? Character motivation seems vague at best.

Here's a scene to prove my point. Remember in DE where you blow up the moon? While it's a great spectacle, it has no consequences for doing so. They just move on to the next map as if nothing happens and the moon is fine. Nothing they do matters, so why care?

This is probably more of a rant than anything else but I kinda hop zombies backpedals to be more like it used to be in the next game.
