Let's talk intuitive design and engaging quests

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:51 AM PDT

    Two things:

    1. I love the extra objectives and quests that have been added to maps. Not only does it give you a lot more to do, but it's also 10x more satisfying to build and upgrade a staff than it is to pull the wunderwaffe out of the mystery box.
    2. I hate how unintuitive zombies has become. The entire experience is built around unfriendly and convoluted design. Gameplay has devolved into monotonous bullshit rather than engaging content.

    A Comparison

Der Reise introduced pack. Getting access to the machine was very easy to figure out and only required you to interact with three very obvious, identical teleporters around the map. It encouraged you to open up the entire map but was also simple enough to not waste your time.

    Dead of the night

    1. First you have to find three different vases around the map, all of which blend into the environment and have 3 separate spawn locations. There's no indication that you have to interact with these objects, instead you have to go out of your way to shoot/melee them.
    2. Once you break the vases you have to feed them zombie souls. Then you have to interact with the gem left behind to see a vague image.
    3. The first image isn't too bad because it's just a picture of a perk machine and those are pretty obvious. Go there and kill some v a m p i r e s
    4. The second image is a picture of a clock. Okay...thats a lot more difficult to find because clocks are just random litter in the map that no one actively takes notice to. Find the clock and stand in a circle for a while
    5. Finally you see a picture of an object. Again, random ass items spread across the map that you have to go hunt down and interact with. One of which is a scroll, but the object you have to find is...a box. And also there's multiple pictures to find if that's what the gaze shows you
    6. Finally you get access to pack

This isn't a complaint on difficulty, because it isn't HARD to do any of those steps. But it is extremely tedious, especially if you're not relying on a tutorial from the internet to guide you through the process. Some people may enjoy mindlessly scouring the map for random objects, but I fucking despise it.

This treasure hunting problem spreads across all aspects of every map now. Shield parts and other buildables are hidden and have multiple spawn locations; and wonder weapons are often locked behind completely arbitrary steps that no casual player would reasonably figure out. The free blundergat from mob is a prime example of this problem. Five invisible skulls (4) hidden throughout the map that you have to throw an axe at to obtain. There's no indication that this even exists.

    Quests

Aside from treasure hunting, what are the other requirements for obtaining wonder weapons in newer maps? Hmm, random tedious nonsense mostly.

I mean look at the origins staffs. Lightning staff not only requires 7 random switches to be flipped around the map, but you have to play the fucking piano to complete the first step. All four staff upgrades require a literal puzzle key to complete. What the fuck man?

The swords from shadows requires you to take multiple trips on a train to spot codes that appear for a brief second during the ride; Der eisen bows are just annoying to obtain (find three random urns, fill the urns, then draw an arrow AT the urn and fire it into a distant bonfire in the background you probably never would have noticed let alone assumed was important); zetsubo weapon and it's upgrade is nonsense; the gauntlet from Gorod requires you to do a treasure hunt for the egg; and revelations...actually just ditched the quest idea entirely. Unless you want to upgrade the apothican, In which case it's a WTF quest shooting random shit in the sky. I'm not even gonna get into bo4.

    So what's the silver lining?

Well obviously quests give you stuff to do, but some objectives are just fun to complete or may even offer up some challenge in doing so. Mob of the dead requires you to feed dogs around the map; The final requirement for upgrading staffs makes you survive with a regular weapon in a location where the walls are constantly shifting until you absorb enough souls to charge it, Final step for bows is the same; Zetsubo skull requires four shrines to be powered, and while The objectives in Gorod are lame and generic, they at least give you some engaging stuff to work towards.

    What's my point?

The "core" features of the map, like pack, buildables, and wonder weapons, should be far more intuitive and engaging to obtain. zombies should strive to make quests genuinely difficult, rather than a challenge of patience where you can either brainlessly scan the map for tiny objects or give in and boot up the 10 minute MrRoflWaffles tutorial. There's no actual difficulty in getting this content - it's literally just a test of knowledge that a lot of players skip by hopping on youtube.

We should have more active steps, like gathering souls around the map (skull / wolf bow) or killing particularly strong enemies (panzer, Margwa).

What about Easter eggs? Well if it isn't obvious by now I don't give a fuck about EEs because they embody everything I think is wrong with zombies currently. If Treyarch wants to maintain the ridiculously obscure steps for EE so that the community can have its "moment" during the first day or two of the map's launch trying to find the steps, then fine, but leave essential elements of the map out of it.

    Solutions

First of all, re-add vulture aid and make it a core perk present on every map. You want perk variety? Buff vulture aid to show part locations and WW/pack steps so that players can OPTIONALLY choose to take the easy route in learning the map (at least this would be entirely in-game, as opposed to tabbing out for youtube). You want EE steps to remain hidden for that (1 day) moment on release? Then don't let vulture aid show anything past WW/parts/pack. Then the zombies youtubers can keep farming views for their EE guides. Otherwise, if you want to do the EE all on your own and love the idea of exploring the map, don't buy vulture aid. Your experience is unaffected.

Secondly, zombies should switch to more challenging/fun steps. Innovation required, but at the very least id rather kill zombies/specials than hunt down a flag somewhere in the enormous map. I think zombies needs to be a lot more difficult anyways, and this might lead into WWs to being a reward for skillful gameplay rather than just a present for MrRoflWaffles subscribers. "Oh oh but I suck and like how easy it is to get WW!" - cool, lots of maps have WWs in the box as an alternative which I'm 100% fine with; and either way custom mutations should let you spawn with the WW or force it into the box.

One final note: spawning with an infinite ammo, unlimited damage specialist item that acts as the ultimate save-me button and boss-destroyer is completely shit design. Fuck you black ops 4 we could have had quests to get those sickass items.

Tldr: essay discussing whether or not origins or shadows is the most overrated map of all time

Actual tldr: quests are cool, but not when they're tedious. good game design would let people reasonably obtain pack, ww, and buildables without outside help. finally, quests should be more engaging and less monotonous. read solutions for my suggestions.

Does anyone know where can I find rounds 1-5 PNG images? I'm working on a Rainmeter calendar widget. I found the regular numbers on a post on Imgur, but I'd really like to use the style of the image on the right (blood-drawn sticks) for the first five days of the month. Thanks!

Best Round 100 map and strat

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:39 AM PDT

I am looking to get round 100 for the first time but want to know the best map and strat to use. I'm playing on Bo3 and don't want to use any Mega Gobblegum. Clasic are ok and don't want to do it on revelation because it's just to easy more something like kino, ascension or DE.

    CotD Easter Egg

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:00 AM PDT

I was doing the CotD Easter egg solo yesterday and I noticed that I did not have to give Nikolai his vodka nor did I have to do the dial step. I remember doing both the very first time I completed the Easter egg. Do you not have to do these steps if you are in a solo game?

Could somebody explain the ultimus story to me?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:25 AM PDT

I played since bo1 however didn't start following the story until around origins time. I have picked up on a decent amount of the ultimus story however I know more about promos because I seen their story play out. Could someone explain what happens in the ultimus maps and why or even give me a brief story overview.

Is playing in a hacked was lobby bannable?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:07 PM PDT

I went into multiplayer zombies on my Xbox, and there was a guy in the lobby who had basically Evey mod. He gave everyone infinite points, guns, etc, and we could fly around the map. I left at round 7, but I'm worried that I'll be banned for playing in a lobby with this guy. To be clear, though: i don't have any mods installed- I was put into this lobby.

    Thanks
