A megathread on the Black Ops Cold War ban situation

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 07:51 AM PDT

    Background:

As nearly everyone on this subreddit is already aware, there is, what appears to be by almost all accounts, a very severe issue with Activision/Treyarch's Anti-cheat software that is causing people to be falsely banned. The error "Sail 630 Nuclear Bug" most often accompanies the ban. The first reports of this specific error occurring date back actually to last year - this post is the earliest I could find on the issue. Though it is important to note that many people who commented on this post reported the error without a ban; it is only within the last month or so that people began to report both the error and the infamous permaban. The issue has seemed to pick up even further within the last week/10 days, with this subreddit being inundated with reports of users receiving this error and a ban. Most of the reports have a fair number of factors in common: the banned users were on PC, they were playing zombies, they were on a reasonably high round (50+ on normal/8+ on Outbreak), and most importantly, they all vehemently proclaimed their innocence. Subsequent reports have detailed users getting banned as early as round 15; some users being banned after playing zombies and then moving to multiplayer; and even apparently a handful of console players experiencing the same sort of problem. But one thing has always remained constant: everyone says they have done nothing wrong.

    Evidence:

Now, I'm sure many people would love to simply say, out of either genuine support for Treyarch or just simply to make themselves worry less about the situation, that this is just a coordinated effort by a bunch of no-good hackers who got caught up in a rightful ban-wave to clear their names, and that honest, upstanding zombies players have nothing to worry about. But the truth of the matter is that the evidence just does not point to this being the case. A quick search on either r/blackopscoldwar or this subreddit for something along the lines of "sail 630 nuclear bug" or "false ban" returns hundreds of threads, each with dozens of replies, of reports of people all getting banned with very similar circumstances. Doing the same on Twitter reveals a similar pattern. Even some well-known streamers have encountered the same problem - and with all their game footage being broadcast to the world, it would be pretty hard for them to mask cheating (ex's: https://www.reddit.com/r/CODZombies/comments/mne0su/round_65_sail_nuclear_630_bug/; https://www.reddit.com/r/CODZombies/comments/mn1ka9/ban_speedrun_any_world_record/). Some big name YouTubers have jumped on the issue, including KrazyRabb1t, CodZombiesHQ, MrDalekJD, and MrRoflWaffles. Perusing the comments of their videos reveals even more reports of this issue.

    Dev Response:

As if the main issue wasn't bad enough, the response from 3arch/ATVI has been completely dismissive, to the point of arrogance. From the first inkling of a problem, u/FoxHoundFPS has triumphantly claimed that all bans are indeed intentional, and that there is no problem with any sort of anti-cheat glitch/false flag. He even went so far as to encourage players to "continue playing Zombies as per usual, which includes chasing high-rounds and personal bests." ATVI's official "support" has been equally curt, refusing to acknowledge any potential issue on their end and fully blaming the players. The fact that, with such a vast volume of people suddenly experiencing the exact same set of circumstances around the exact same time, NO ONE on the dev team can even reply with a "thanks, we will look into this" is astounding, or even give a little more detail into the exact reason for these "legitimate" bans. But anyway, I digress.

    What To Do:

At this point, there is kind of no reason to keep pushing the devs for any sort of different or more elaborate response - not in the current state of this issue. It is simply not a big enough financial concern for them right now - why spend money to look into a few thousand people who were unfairly banned, when you can continue to make money of off millions of others? We need to simply keep building traction on this. I would encourage anyone who has been banned to comment below this post with some information about your situation, such as:

    • What platform you are on
    • What you were doing prior to getting banned (what map you were on; what round; what game mode (survival/Outbreak); what load out you had (weapons, grenades, perks, field upgrades, etc.)
    • If you were doing anything with your internet prior to your ban (changing networks, connecting/disconnecting from a VPN, internet cut out and came back on, ethernet cable got disconnected/reconnected, etc…). This too seems to be a fairly common feature of many of these reports
    • If you were playing solo/co-op (for the latter, specify if the other players were on the same/a different platform)
    • How much progression you had overall on your profile (rank, playtime, camos, upgrades, etc...)
    • If your account has ever been the victim of theft (somebody stole your info and logged into your account, you got a sign in attempt alert that wasn't from you, etc...) plus if you have two-factor auth enabled or not

Additionally, please, PLEASE specify if you ever, intentionally or otherwise, had a glitch/exploit benefit you in any potentially unfair way. There are three major "helpful" glitches that I can recall occurring recently:

    • the Firebase Z door skip glitch in the starting area, whereby players could essentially "parkour" onto the roof with the teleporter without buying the first door. The first iteration of this glitch is shown here; this was subsequently patched but other methods of doing this were derived.
    • the massive amounts of Aetherium Crystals that some players reported randomly getting. This seemed to occur when a player would disconnect and reconnect to the game; they would then be given massive amounts of all three types of Aetherium Crystals that they would actually be able to spend on upgrades (effects of glitch shown here).
    • the monkey bomb "god mode" glitch, by which you could obtain a sort of permanent monkey bomb effect and you would be ignored by zombies. I do not want to actually link a tutorial because I do not support cheating and do not want to show people how to do a potentially unpatched exploit, but rest assured you can find it easily by searching for it on YT

If you have done/had happen to you any potentially helpful glitches/exploits - especially the above three - and then subsequently been hit with this current problem please include it in your comment. If this is truly the reason for all of the recent bans (which I honestly do not believe, but we need to consider all possibilities), then it would make sense why the devs have been so adamant that these bans were intact legitimate - performing exploits to benefit oneself is a violation of the Security Enforcement Policy. Again, I really don't think this could account for every single ban, nor am I trying to cast any doubt on the people that have been hit with this issue and claim to be innocent, we just have to analyze every single factor in this situation.

ADDITIONALLY, please detail if you WERE able to get to a moderately high round (40-50+) WITHOUT a ban (console or PC, but particularly PC)

    Legal recourse:

Regardless of what is causing this issue, the sheer lack of valuable communication from anyone is unacceptable. People paid real money for this game; the least the devs can do is tell people why their services were cancelled. I would recommend starting with a report to the Better Business Bureau. People like to claim that a BBB rating doesn't really affect anything, but companies and corporations really do care about it. Think back to the Gorod Krovi EE crash issue - PS4 players literally could not complete the easter egg on that map for over a year because it would crash 100% of the time. People finally began to file BBB reports on the issue and within an astonishingly short amount of time (I want to say like a week or something; correct me if I am wrong) the issue was resolved. The link to start this process is here: https://www.bbb.org/consumer-complaints/file-a-complaint/get-started

After that, I'd recommend a Federal Trade Commission report. The website claims that it is meant for customers to report cases of "fraud, scams, and bad business practices" - I'd say this falls, at the very least, under the lattermost of these descriptors. For non-US players, I am fairly sure you can still file an FTC report, but there is also econsumer.gov, a cross-border consumer rights project sponsored by the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network that the FTC supports (as detailed here: https://www.ftc.gov/policy/international/international-consumer-protection).

If necessary, there is the option of an arbitration. Arbitration is a form of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) - meaning it takes place outside of the judiciary courts. A neutral person/group of persons (an "arbiter," "arbitrator," or "arbitral tribunal") decides the dispute. In Binding Arbitration involves the rendering of an "arbitration award," which is legally enforceable by the courts. In Activision's Terms of Use, under "Section 4. BINDING ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER," this is outlined as the method by which disputes can be settled. If both parties, meaning the player and Activision, do not reach an "an agreed-upon solution within a period of 30 days from the time informal dispute resolution is pursued" ("informal dispute resolution" meaning the use of Activision's Customer Support department), then arbitration may be initiated through JAMS , an ADR service. Now, what is crucial to understand is that, under these Terms of Use, arbitration may only be undertaken only in your "individual capacity," meaning your arbitration only necessarily applies to you. However, as detailed in the paragraph of Section 4 titled "Class Action Waiver," if "any court or arbitrator determines that the class action waiver set forth in this paragraph is void or unenforceable for any reason or that an arbitration can proceed on a class basis, then the arbitration provision set forth above shall be deemed null and void in its entirety and the parties shall be deemed to have not agreed to arbitrate disputes." Theoretically, this means that an arbitrator could determine that a single customer's issue is indicative of an issue that substantially effects enough other customers to be legally remediable in a class-action manner, meaning one person pushing this issue far enough could have widespread benefit. Now, that that is all out of the way, disclaimer time: I am not a lawyer, nor do I claim to be, so the above paragraph is to remain solely my interpretation of what someone's legal course of action could be. It could be entirely correct, or entirely wrong. I'd encourage you to use this only as a starting point if you truly wish to initiate some kind of legal procedure, and to conduct your own research, read the Terms of Use for yourself, and to possibly contact a legal professional.

    Conclusion:

This certainly seems like a very hopeless scenario, both for the people who have already been banned and for those that are afraid of the same happening to them. We paid real money for this game; people deserve better than to have their services canceled with no explanation. Even if there really, truly, actually is a legitimate reason for these bans, the least someone on the dev team can do is give a more definitive statement besides just the same PR regurgitation. But, if we keep pressing this issue, I firmly believe something could change. As far as I can remember, a similar false ban wave was occurring in Warzone, and people's accounts did end up getting restored. But for now, good luck to the zombies community, and keep your accounts safe out there. I'd honestly recommend just avoiding Cold War altogether for now - zombies, MP, PC, Console, everything.

!!Edit: added a couple additional ideas on what to discuss in your ban report below under the "What to Do" section of this post

!!Edit 2: added a part about reporting successful high rounds that have NOT resulted in bans to the "What to Do" section

!!Edit 3: added a segment about the monkey bomb god mode glitch to the "What to Do" section

The Banned Accounts Wont Be Recovered

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 10:34 AM PDT

    Unless something big happens....

Out of all foxhound has said, there will be NO unbans.

To combat this, we need to come together as an community, and together we can make activision respond to this widespread issue.

This is just basically a company stealing money from customers.. Banning them for being innocent.

My 65 year old dad has played every zombie mode since world at war. He's great at it. He had to revive me 30 times today. I hoped you might enjoy seeing him in action.

This sub needs to be essentially shut down until the bans are reversed.

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 08:28 PM PDT

I'm completely avoiding Zombies and overall don't feel like playing Cold War at all. Activisions response has been so fucking awful it's sickening. They make HOW MUCH money every year and can't be fucked to push a finished working product? If you want the bans resolved, we gotta band together and make the biggest stink we can possibly manage.

Cod zombies and cod as a whole rn

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 06:08 AM PDT

So as many of you know, the pc banning bug has plagued not just the zombies community, but the cod community itself and like many of you COD has been one of main comfort games for years, especially zombies, so to now see it go from a place i can go to cheer myself up to a place im absolutely terrified to even go to the menu, damn im even scared to go on cold war, warzone or modern warfare rn and its heartbreaking.

Now i can say i have never cheated cod in my entire life, especially cold war and modern warfare, but realistically there is no solid evidence i can provide except my word which makes this situation that much scarier, activation and treyarch are acting like boarder line dictators in this situation and it's absolutely disgusting, not only turning your backs on your loyal fanbase but lying to our faces?! When you say your "security team" checks every ban before its set in stone we all know that is total Bs, unless your "security team" consists of hundreds of people there is no way that anyone could properly check each and every ban that is probably in the thousands every day, its not humanly possible.

I think if they are checking, they arent doing it properly, a quick glance maybe a second or two and its yes, i mean for all i know they could just have an auto clicker clicking on ban for every appeal, but i still highly doubt that they are even checking all of them in the first place.

Now another reason for innocent bans ive seen and i do think is the real culprit here is the anti cheat is flagging background software, thinking that its cheats when in reality its not, for example recently i have been grinding zombies (before i was made aware of this) i would normally have open either, my browser (opera GX) for youtube, discord or spotify. And i always have MSI afterburner open to control gpu fan speeds so they dont constantly rev, i dont even use the overlay since cold war and modern warfare already have one built in, only times i really ever use the overlay is to take a quick glance at cpu temps, usage blah blah blah and then i immediately close it again. So im scared that the anti cheat will think something like my browser or my MSI afterburner is actually cheats and will ban me. This is further backed up by its only happening on pc, since consoles dont have MSI afterburner, and can have things like discord, spotify or youtube open and playing in the background.

I personally think that activision and treyarch need to be spoonfed here and be given undeniable truth that there IS a problem here, how could this be done you ask, I personally think a big name in the zombies or cod community needs to stream a few games of zombies and show that they have nothing but legit programs running in say task manager and see if they get banned because other wise, i dont think we will get out of this loop that we as a community are certain that there is a bug but treyarch and activision don't believe us or are in denial

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 08:47 AM PDT

Why I believe this bug has not been addressed and what can treyarch and activision do?

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 07:25 AM PDT

Ima keep this first part simple, I think the reason this bug has not been properly addressed is one simple answer, season 3, alot of us have completely forgotten season 3 is in 10 days so treyarch and probably up to their necks in work for season 3, not to mention from home so I personally think we will see a fix or at the very least a better explanation at season 3 or shortly after its release, when the devs can take more time to address the bug.

Now, if treyarch and activision are convinced this is not a bug and people have been rightfully banned, they need to prove it. A good suggestion would be to open a temporary support line, exclusively for bans regarding zombies and the nuclear bug message. This would be a backbone for players to feel more safe playing zombies as if they where to get banned, they could have a much better chance at getting their account back if they where innocent.

Now the chances of anyone from treyarch or activision seeing nevermind taking into consideration this post from a random skinny white boy complaining on reddit are probably impossible, but we can dream i guess

    Getting really tired of this

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 11:29 AM PDT

Even if people are cheating/glitching in Zombies, they should not be banned. There should be no consequences for modifying a singleplayer experience.

    Posted: 10 Apr 2021 09:38 AM PDT

If people are hacking public Zombie lobbies, fuck em. but thats not what were talking about here. Video games thrive on the community that plays them and mods help the game thrive by offering players new ways to enjoy the game. So someone cheats to get to round 100. fan-fucking-tastic for them. they do not deserve any repercussions. if someone wants to activate a nolcip mod to explore out of the game boundaries, who does that hurt? one of my favorite channels to turn on when playing games on the other monitor is Shesez, who in various games uses modded cameras to explore the game and see whats not usually seen, and its fascinating. having an Anti Cheat disabled mode like Halo MCC does would go a long way. there is no reason to ban players for cheating in singleplayer experiences and only serves to drive home the fact you don't own the game. you own a license to play as they see fit."oh no the player is glitchijng to gain an advantage" So fucking what? they own the game, they are playing offline, it hurts no one at all.

although dont let this post distract you from the fact that despite the shit about people hacking ive talked about, people are currently being banned for LITERALLY no reason.
